As the 2023 season comes to a close for many of us, we have some useful outboard winter storage tips if you are not planning on using your outboard during the winter months.
Treat your fuel! Throughout the season, contaminated fuel was the number 1 reason for running issues. Do not keep old untreated fuel, untreated fuel has a short shelf life. If your boat has a built in fuel tank, use high octane fuel and a fuel stabiliser.
Run your engine with a fresh water supply and your treated fuel. This will allow the fuel in the engine to also be treated.
Top Tip – do not unplug the fuel supply and allow a fuel injected engine to run dry of fuel. This will damage the expensive high pressure fuel pump.

When your engine is laid up during the winter period, we highly recommend fogging oil is used. This prevents moisture effecting the engine internals which can lead to your engine seizing.
If you are storing your outboard at home over the winter, make sure it is stored in the correct position. If you are unsure of what side to lay your outboard down, check around your cowling or the engine leg. Below are a couple of examples.
